Allegany Law Foundation, Inc. recently received a grant from the Maryland Legal Services Corporation to expand their free wills program. Since 2020, the organization has been providing wills, powers of attorney and advanced directives for Allegany County seniors at quarterly clinics held at their office at 13 Canal Street. The new funding will allow the program to expand into the community and offer this service at remote locations including senior centers, community agencies, and housing complexes to make it more accessible to seniors with transportation challenges. The grant will also fund two separate clinics to make deed changes for seniors who wish to place a family member on their house deed or establish a lifetime estate.
As Executive Director Lori Lewis stated, “estate planning gives seniors peace of mind. They know that their wishes will be followed if they should become incapacitated or pass away. We started this program in 2020 when the future was very uncertain for everyone. Since then, we have assisted over 200 individuals with estate planning documents and hope to significantly increase that number this year.”
Program participants must be Allegany County residents age 60 or older and meet modest income guidelines. Individuals interested in getting a will, power of attorney, and/or an advance directive completed should contact Allegany Law by calling 301 722-3390.
